Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP)

The Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP), commonly referred to as the UP Board, is the primary education board responsible for conducting High School and Intermediate examinations in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Headquartered in Prayagraj, it holds the distinction of being the largest examination body in the world in terms of student participation.

Every year, millions of students enroll in Class 10th and 12th under this board. The UP Board is also responsible for preparing the syllabus, granting recognition to schools, and prescribing textbooks for affiliated institutions.

History and Background

The UP Board was established in the year 1921 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) by an act of the United Provinces Legislative Council. It conducted its first-ever examination in 1923. Before its formation, the University of Allahabad conducted these high school and intermediate exams. Notably, the UP Board was the first in India to adopt the 10+2 system of education.

Recognition and Accreditation

UPMSP is a statutory body established by the Government of Uttar Pradesh. Its qualifications are recognized globally and across India.

• COBSE Member: UPMSP is a member of the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE).
• Higher Education: Mark sheets issued by the UP Board are valid for admission to all universities, including Delhi University, BHU, and foreign institutions.
• Competitive Exams: The curriculum is recognized for national-level competitive exams like IIT-JEE, NEET, UPSC, and SSC.

Curriculum and Syllabus

In a major move to modernize education, the UP Board has adopted the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) syllabus for almost all subjects in Class 9th to 12th.

This alignment ensures that students from rural Uttar Pradesh can compete effectively with students from CBSE and ICSE boards in national entrance exams. The medium of instruction is primarily Hindi, but English medium options are widely available in affiliated schools.

Examination Pattern (10th & 12th)

The board follows a rigorous examination pattern aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP). It recently introduced OMR sheets for objective-type questions in High School examinations.

High School (Class 10)

The Class 10 exam typically consists of six subjects. Students are evaluated based on a theory paper (70 marks) and internal assessment (30 marks). To pass, a student must secure at least 33% marks.

Intermediate (Class 12)

The Intermediate exam is divided into streams: Science (PCM/PCB), Commerce, and Arts. Practical exams play a crucial role in Science subjects, usually carrying 30 marks, while theory carries 70 marks.
